Intense mowing management suppresses invader, but shifts competitive resistance by a native to facilitation

چکیده

Interactions among native and invasive species may affect management outcomes goals. We implemented different mowing regimes to control the Solidago gigantea restore natural diversity, also examined interactions between a European competitor, Tanacetum vulgare in context of these regimes. Experimentally planted suppressed by 79% without management, suite reduced density 80–98% when was absent. But, added, invader not mowing. Put another way, mowed plots with Tanacetum, twofold over fivefold denser than Tanacetum. It is clear why effect shifted from competition absence disturbance facilitation intense management-associated disturbance, but other studies suggest that create plant–soil feedbacks favor Solidago. Evidence shows similar shifts under for species, are mechanistically either. speculate while leaving belowground facilitative effects unchanged, shifting net facilitation. When single-year were abandoned just 1 year, control, thus maintaining treatments time important successful management. Our results indicate mechanical substantially alter biotic resistance gained competition.

Herbivores mediate different competitive and facilitative responses of native and invader populations of Brassica nigra.

Differences in plant and herbivore community assemblages between exotic and native ranges may select for different levels of plant traits in invasive and native populations of plant species. Little is currently known of how herbivores may mediate competitive and facilitative interactions between invasive and native populations of plant species and their plant neighbors. Here, we conducted a com...

Biotic resistance: exclusion of native rodent consumers releases populations of a weak invader

1. Biotic resistance is a commonly invoked hypothesis to explain why most exotic plant species naturalize at low abundance. Although numerous studies have documented negative impacts of native consumers on exotic plant performance, longer-term multi-generation studies are needed to understand how native consumer damage to exotics translates to their population-level suppression over large lands...

Grassland invader responses to realistic changes in native species richness.

The importance of species richness for repelling exotic plant invasions varies from ecosystem to ecosystem. Thus, in order to prioritize conservation objectives, it is critical to identify those ecosystems where decreasing richness will most greatly magnify invasion risks. Our goal was to determine if invasion risks greatly increase in response to common reductions in grassland species richness...

Linking Native and Invader Traits Explains Native Spider Population Responses to Plant Invasion.

Theoretically, the functional traits of native species should determine how natives respond to invader-driven changes. To explore this idea, we simulated a large-scale plant invasion using dead spotted knapweed (Centaurea stoebe) stems to determine if native spiders' web-building behaviors could explain differences in spider population responses to structural changes arising from C. stoebe inva...

Biotic resistance to invader establishment of a southern Appalachian plant community is determined by environmental conditions

1 Tests of the relationship between resident plant species richness and habitat invasibility have yielded variable results. I investigated the roles of experimental manipulation of understorey species richness and overstorey characteristics in resistance to invader establishment in a floodplain forest in south-western Virginia, USA. 2 I manipulated resident species richness in experimental plot...
